The study of the Martial Arts is one of the few activities that bring together the energies of the mind, body, and spirit. The mission of the Sanuces Ryu is to preserve the purity and legacy of Dr. Moses Powell and his teachings as well as to cultivate that energy so that it may be applied to daily life.

Our curriculum offers a balanced approach to self defense. The curriculum features a blending of boxing movement, traditional striking and kicking skills, an understanding of how to land when thrown, as well as standing joint locks (Kansetsu Waza), controlling techniques (Kyu Waza), throws (Nage), weapon defense, and healing (Seifukujutsu). We incorporate the traditional precepts of Bushido: Honor, Loyalty, Courage, Justice, Benevolence, Honesty, and Respect in the Dojo (training hall). It is the blending of the traditional art and modern adaptations that provides our students an effective system that will serve them well in any environment from the board room to a back alley.

While our focus is primarily one of self defense, we also practice randori (controlled sparring) in class. Flow drills are used to help develop smooth transitions and confidence in applying techniques in randori. Randori helps to build further confidence in your technique and in yourself as a student’s skills and understanding increase. Our goal is to finish a technique quickly, generally within 1-5 seconds, and get away from the situation safely. We teach our students to be able to walk away from a situation rather than be forced to run from it. Training is not focused on competition, but rather perfection of technique and character.
