DR. MOSES POWELL
THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE
Born on January 13, 1941 in Norfolk, VA, to Athenia and Moses Powell, Dr.Powell, a 10th degree black belt, studied martial arts for more than 45 years. He is immortalized in both the Black Belt Hall of Fame and in the World Karate Hall of Fame.
Dr. Powell was the first martial artist ever invited to perform at the United Nations, and has the added distinction of being one of the first Black martial artists to teach the fighting arts to the FBI, the Secret Service, the DEA, and many police departments around the country. He was also a featured demonstrator at the 1965 World Fair in New York.
In 1972, The Benin Empire of West Africa awarded him the International Benin Award for his community work and efforts throughout the world. He attributed much of his success to his teacher, the late Grand Professor Florendo Vistacion, founder of Vee-Jitsu Ryu.
Deeply committed to sharing his knowledge and principles with everyone, Dr. Powell worked closely with ex-offenders, disadvantaged youth, and senior citizens across the US until his passing on January 22, 2005. He left behind Gina Barnett, his life partner, and his daughters Cheryl, Tina, Kirema , and Siddeequah to both mourn his loss, and to celebrate his life.
Gone in body yet not in spirit, he lives on within the more than half a million students world-wide who were blessed to call him father and teacher. A great teacher and inspiration to many in the martial arts community, we preserve his legacy by honoring him and practicing Sanuces Ryu JiuJitsu.
